In The Beginning werd in 1977 in Seattle, Washington, opgericht als een winkel door Sharon Evans Yenter. Het was Sharons doel om te voorzien in de behoefte van quilters en hobbyisten aan hoogwaardige katoenen stoffen, lessen, inspiratie en vriendschap. In de loop der jaren groeide In The Beginning van een kleine zolderruimte uit tot een quiltersparadijs van meer dan 6000 vierkante meter.
In 1996 werd een nieuwe divisie aan het bedrijf toegevoegd en werd In The Beginning Fabrics geboren. Het doel van deze nieuwe toevoeging was om mooie en innovatieve katoenen stoffen te creëren die verkocht zouden worden in onafhankelijke stoffenwinkels in de VS en de rest van de wereld.
Tegenwoordig wordt het bedrijf gerund door Sharons zoon Jason. In 2005 werd besloten om de winkel te sluiten en zich volledig te concentreren op het maken van stoffen. Zowel moeder als zoon besteden nu het grootste deel van hun tijd aan persoonlijk ontwerpen of werken samen met andere kunstenaars om de twaalf tot veertien collecties te ontwerpen die het bedrijf elk jaar produceert. Het bedrijf produceert ook een verscheidenheid aan boeken, patronen en gratis hand-outs.
